have kids the same age, 30, 40 minutes away from newtown in elementary school in a town very similar. this hit very close to home for us and for a lot of people. >> you know, based on that point, if it can happen in newtown and it can happen anywhere, in a small rural community and haggerstown, maryland, an idyllic community, town of 30,000, just likes newtown, and people are mourning and weeping as they mourn for the teachers at sanry hook elementary school. >> just when you think you can be composed and keep it together and maybe the tears will have stopped, they put out the names and ages of the victims and even not knowing them, but just to read through their names and their ages is just wretching. we will show you some of their names now, the victims, there were 12. we'll show them later to you, basically 20 children and younger than we thought, remember that president obama and his first report that they were between five and ten years old. they were really just six and seven years old, all of them and it's also to know, we didn't know at the time, what close range they were ki
in newtown, connecticut. today, we'll remember the victims. we'll also go in depth on where the investigation stands, and talk with dr. sanjay gupta and drew pinsky, about what medical science has learned about the mind of a killer. we'll also look ahead of where do we go from here? especially when it comes to the right to bear arms in the united states, and what president obama called the nation's epidemic of gun violence. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer. we begin our special edition of "the situation room" by focusing in on the search for answers. why? why would a 20-year-old man kill his mother, then gun down 20 children and six adults at the sandy hook elementary school before taking his own life? why? police are not the only ones pouring over the evidence, exploring answers. medical investigators are all over this case as well. let's go to our chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta. he is joining us now. now, sanjay, you have been taking a very close look, potentially at the mind of a killer. >> yeah, and that question, why
who is with the latest. who is the killer. >> we know his name adam lanza and lived in newtown, connecticut with his mother nancy who was shot dead in her bed in her home that shared with the shooter. he took her car and at least three weapons and maybe more. glock and hour and m-4 assault rifle ask went to the school where his mother worked as a substitute teacher and got through security and went to two room one area of the school and began to shoot children and adultings. he shot 20 kids. 18 died at the scene and two in the hospital died. he shot six adults including the principal and took his own life has police got to the school. >> is there any report on what high was saying or anything peculliar about him. >> a six year old boy said the shooter came in and shot the teacher and the boy ran out and that shooter didn't say a sandwich word. we heard from the shooter's brother that he was learning disabled and may have been autistic. >> and the mother was supposed to teach today? >> we don't know that either. we know that the young man woke up this morning at home and shot hi
of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you

in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some lawmakers came forward and expressed interest in introducing legislation about gun control, but i guess the question is will they really in the new year? >> reporter: it really -- the reaction, especially and even among republicans to the nra idea is sort of muted at best. it's not a lot of enthusiasm on capitol hill for the idea of the federal government stepping in and endorsing the idea of all schools having armed police officers. never mind funding it. listen to a couple of senators, starting with a republican. >> we had an armed guard in columbine. we had an assault ban. none of it worked. we're talking about preventing mass murder from nontraditional criminals. people who are not traditional criminals, who are not wired right for some reason. >> since we passed the brady law, the assaults are down. we need to keep working on this, and there are lots of different solutions. >> just because the republicans may not be runn
even one tiny iota of the courage that the teachers, the principal in newtown showed on friday. >>> finally, some real answers about the benghazi attack that killed four americans. we now know more than reason for the grossly inadequate security. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." we begin with president obama's call to action against what he calls the national epidemic of gun violence amid the trauma over the newtown school massacre, he has put vice president biden in charge of the agenda that could be submitted to congress next month. and a growing number of americans want action from the government. a brand new poll shows that 52% of u.s. adult dults favor major restrictions on guns, making all guns illegal versus 47% last august. let's turn to our white house correspondent brianna keilar. she's joining us. the president came out and didn't mince very words. >> reporter: no, wolf. this is the first time that president obama has laid out a time line. he appointed vice president biden to lead this group of cabinet lawmakers to come out with some solutions and he

"outfront" tonight, ryan, political analyst, roland martin. >> how you doing? >> good to see you guys. >> good to be here. >> is this just playing up to the nra or it is plausible solution to stop school shootings? >> it's certainly not a plausible solution, but the problem is, there are no plausible solutions. there's a guy, a criminalnologist who wrote a great piece about this. the thing with mass shootings, these guys are determined. they plan well in advance to evade security measures. and so, the idea from the right that you're going to arm police officials and have them at every school is false and the idea on the left that you're going to eliminate guns that's also false. you have to look at the gun violence problem more broadly rather than fighting the last war. >> but there is a disconnect in this conversation. i want to play for you guys a quote from frank lutz. here's what he had to say about the nra's proposal. >> the public wants guns out

this is reported i thought was redundant, like saying president obama's speech in n newtown was a call to scripture and prayer. it wasn't what he was talking about but he referenced scripture and prayer. the first words out of his mouth, the lord is already near, come, let us adore him. it was a spiritual message. in the middle of the message he reflected on the traditional family which we know the church supports and has long supported. and defended. and he made glancing reference to our personal selfishness and said that's a threat to the family. people not wanting to make commitments. and therefore give of their time and their energy to have families in the first place. and then he made reference to this manipulation of nature. but he never mentioned gay marriage. he never mentioned gay people in there. so i think, you know, it is it was certainly one can interpret that was the focus of what he was talking about in that particular paragraph. but i think to characterize the whole message that way is reductive. he was calling all of us to task for various failings, in our personal lives, and i thi
